]]>
Huawei revealed the Top 10 Trends of Data Center Facility in 2024 and released a corresponding White Paper. Yao Quan, President of Huawei Data Center Facility Domain, defined the three characteristics of future data centers: reliable, simplified, and sustainable.

Trend 1: High-Reliability Products And Professional Services Are Keys Ensuring Secure And Reliable Data Center Operation

The concept of “full-chain safety” must be implemented throughout product design and manufacturing. By providing professional deployment and O&M services, we can reduce product failure rates, minimize post-disaster impacts, and improve the end-to-end assurance mechanism.

Trend 2: Distributed Cooling Architecture Will Become a Better Choice For Ensuring Cooling Safety

In contrast to the centralized cooling architecture, the distributed cooling architecture is more flexible in the sense that subsystems are independent of each other, and faults of a single device exert no impact on the operation of other devices.

Trend 3: Predictive Maintenance Will Become a Basic Feature Of Data Center Infrastructure

Data center maintenance is usually performed after an event. However, with the advent of the intelligent computing era, maintenance after an event will be replaced by maintenance before an event. The service life of vulnerable components, thermal runaway of devices, and leakage of the cooling system can be predicted to prevent accidents.

Trend 4: The Lifecycle Network Security Protection System Will Become A Shield of Data Center Facility

As digital and intelligent technologies keep advancing, network attacks are occurring more frequently. Software security must be built upon a lifecycle network security protection system from three dimensions: supply security, in-depth defense, and O&M/operation security.

Trend 5: The Prefabricated And Modular Solution Will Become An Optimal Choice For High-Quality And Fast Delivery

Compared with traditional construction, the prefabricated and modular solution features a shorter construction period and higher quality. It ensures high-quality onsite delivery and fast service rollout, and significantly reduces waste brought by onsite construction.

Trend 6: Professional Management Platform Makes Data Center O&M More Secure And Efficient

Data centers are presenting a trend to scale up in an intensive manner. Consequently, the complexity of overall O&M increases dramatically. A professional management platform can significantly improve the O&M efficiency and accuracy of data centers.

Trend 7: Convergence Of Air And Liquid Cooling Becomes The Preferred Architecture In Uncertain Service Requirements Scenarios

The industry is transitioning from general-purpose computing to intelligent computing. Scenarios supported by general-purpose computing and intelligent computing may exist in a data center. Therefore, the convergence of air and liquid cooling will become a preferred architecture, where the proportion of air cooling and liquid cooling can be adjusted to flexibly adapt to different needs.

Trend 8: Indirect Evaporative Cooling Will Be The Best Refrigeration Scheme

Considering cooling sources, the indirect evaporative cooling system has obvious advantages over the chilled water system in terms of architecture, efficiency, and O&M. The distributed cooling architecture of an indirect evaporative cooling system effectively prevents single-point failures. By maximizing the utilization of free cooling sources, only one heat exchange is required. In cold regions, compressors can stay dormant the majority of the time, achieving optimal PUE.

Trend 9: To Further Reduce PUE, The Optimal Solution Is Shifting Focus On Efficient Components to System Engineering Optimisation

Traditional data centers focus on improving the efficiency of equipment. However, due to physical limitations, the efficiency improvement of components is about to hit a bottleneck. Therefore, the focus on efficient components should be shifted to system engineering optimization, with the S-ECO mode as an example.

Trend 10: AI Optimisation Will Become The Optimal Choice for Intelligent Optimization Of Energy Efficiency For Existing Data Centers

In contrast to traditional ways, the AI energy efficiency optimisation solution optimizes the energy efficiency of existing data centers with preset AI algorithms and big data models. In addition, as AI optimization does not rely on the expertise of relevant personnel, it features fast optimization and excellent effects.

Huawei will insist on creating reliable, simplified, and sustainable data center facility products and solutions to help customers and partners build green and reliable infrastructure for computing by enabling each watt to drive more computing power, as part of our efforts to power the digital era forward.

Five new STUDER cylindrical grinding machines have significantly expanded Turkish company SELSA’s business field. For over 30 years, SELSA has been supplying international clients in the automotive industry with high-quality components.

Before STUDER came into the picture, Cem Dizdar, SELSA’s Managing Director recounted his family fleeing former Yugoslavia during the war, a move that that led to founding one of the country’s flagship companies in the machining sector. His father, a mechanical engineer trained in Germany, established the company in 1992 from scratch.

Back then, only a handful of employees worked in a small space. There are some 280 skilled workers today manufacturing precision parts for an international clientele from the automotive sector, in a modern 7,000 sqm (75,400 sqft) facility round the clock. Most recently, five CNC universal cylindrical grinding machines from STUDER have been added to the operation.

“There is no more prestigious brand than STUDER when it comes to grinding machines, and we did not want to compromise on quality and precision with this investment,” says Dizdar, explaining the purchase of four favourite machines and one favourite CNC.

He speaks from his office at SELSA’s headquarters in Bursa, and one of the Turkey’s most important industrial centers for the automotive industry.

Customer Diversification And High Technology As A Strategy

A German automotive supplier has also been producing in Bursa since the 1970s.

“We have a long history with STUDER,” says Dizdar.

His grandfather worked there, his father completed supplementary training, and his mother from Germany was a teacher in Bursa who taught the children of the employees. When the first major order for the mass production of diesel injection nozzles came in 1995, it was an important milestone for SELSA.

The high demands on quality, precision, and efficiency have become ingrained in the company’s DNA, earning it a reputation beyond the local region. Dizdar has been familiar with all the company’s operations and processes since his youth and later studied mechanical engineering in Istanbul himself.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced its roadmap to commercialise its inhouse-developed, autonomous-drive mobility services in Japan.

This is a significant step towards the company’s long-term vision, Nissan Ambition 2030, to empower mobility by solving transportation service issues faced by local communities in Japan. Local communities have been facing several mobility challenges, such as driver shortages, which are a result of an ageing population.

With this service, Nissan will provide a broad range of new services that enable free movement. Nissan has been testing business models for mobility services in Japan and abroad since 2017.

These vicinities include the Minato Mirai area of Yokohama and Namie town, Fukushima Prefecture, where a manned mobility service called Namie Smart Mobility has been in operation since 2021. Outside Japan, Nissan has been testing autonomous-drive mobility in London and other areas with the support of the UK government.

Equipped with this knowledge, Nissan plans to begin offering autonomous-drive mobility services starting in fiscal year 2027, working with third parties such as local authorities and transport operators. Nissan will begin trials in the Minato Mirai area in fiscal 2024, and eventually scale up the trials the following fiscal year.

During the trials, the level of autonomous driving will be gradually enhanced while assessing customer acceptance, with the aim to provide driverless services.

The following is a broad timeline:

Nissan’s initiative will be promoted in close cooperation with the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry; Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism; and other central ministries. The ministries will also promote initiatives to realise new autonomous mobility services at the Level 4 Mobility Acceleration Committee that they organise.

AutoFlight, the eVTOL pioneer, presented the world’s first inter-city electric air-taxi demonstration flight between the southern Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Zhuhai. A 20 minute journey versus a three hour drive.

AutoFlight’s five-seater Prosperity eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft completed a significant milestone by autonomously flying the 50km (31 miles) route from Shenzhen to Zhuhai. The flight from Shenzhen to Zhuhai across the Pearl River Delta took just 20 minutes, a journey that would require three hours by car.

This is the world’s first public flight of an eVTOL aircraft on a cross-sea and inter-city route, spanning across the bay where the Pearl River meets the sea, connecting the two southern Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Zhuhai. This flight marks a significant milestone in the development and road to certification of this exciting new form of mobility.

The route between Shenzhen and Zhuhai is part of the future air traffic scenario planned by the regional government as it develops its “low-altitude economy” strategy that will see the opening of thousands of vertiports and hundreds of eVTOL airs routes across the Greater Bay Area in southern China. Low-altitude application scenarios will include passenger transport, tourism, logistics and emergency services. In the short term, plans are in development to achieve 300,000 cargo UAV flights in this region per year.

Tian Yu, Founder, CEO and Co-Chairman of AutoFlight said: “We are thrilled to showcase AutoFlight’s cutting-edge capabilities today in the world’s first cross-sea and inter-city eVTOL demonstration flight. Working closely together with the local authorities and partners here, and in other jurisdictions around the world, we will continue to drive this revolution to bring safe, efficient, sustainable and affordable eVTOL flight options to cities around the world.”

AutoFlight’s partner in the region Heli-Eastern, a major low-altitude general aviation carrier and helicopter service provider, recently entered an agreement with AutoFlight to purchase 100 Prosperity passenger eVTOL aircraft. The aircraft will be used on routes such as the one demonstrated by AutoFlight, from Shekou Ferry Port in Shenzhen to the Jiuzhou Ferry Port in Zhuhai, as well as from other transportation hubs in the region.

Tian continued: We warmly welcome our strong cooperation with Heli-Eastern and together we are rapidly moving towards fully operational air-taxi routes all across the region,” he said.

The demonstration flight took place in one of the world’s most densely populated areas, home to circa 86 million people, and in an airspace that borders multiple international airports, including Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Macau. The flight showcased AutoFlight’s cutting-edge aviation technology in a highly complex environment, and its dedication to safety and regulatory compliance in pushing the boundaries of urban air mobility.

The demonstration flight was uncrewed and fully autonomous, with certification for crewed passenger flights anticipated within approximately two years. Referred to as air-taxis, eVTOLs do not require traditional airports or runways.

Similar to helicopters, they take off vertically and transition into fixed-wing flight mode in the air, cruising at high speeds like traditional large aircraft. The aircraft delivers an electric-powered, safe, comfortable, sustainable and affordable performance at significantly lower noise levels than traditional aircraft.

Prosperity was designed by Frank Stephenson, the renowned designer who revolutionized the Mini and the Fiat 500, and created iconic designs for Ferrari, McLaren and Maserati, among many others, before turning his design talents to the skies and the realm of flying taxis.

Apple has cancelled work on its electric car, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on 27 February 2024, a decade after the iPhone maker kicked off the mission.

Source: Reuters

The move draws the curtain on a plan that would have helped Apple break out into a new industry and potentially replicate the success of the iPhone. The project saw uneven progress throughout its life and its end comes as global automakers cut back their investments in electric vehicles, whose demand has dropped significantly.

Several employees working on the project will be shifted to the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) division, according to Bloomberg News, which first reported the development. Apple declined to comment.

“If it is true, Apple will put more focus on GenAI and that should give investors more optimism about the company’s efforts and ability to compete at a platform level on AI,” said Ben Bajarin, CEO of consulting firm Creative Strategies.

Apple has so far held back from any big moves in AI, in stark contrast to tech giants such as Alphabet and Microsoft which have first-mover advantage in incorporating the breakthrough technology. Its quiet approach has sparked worries the iPhone-maker could be behind in integrating the technology into its products.

That was reflected in Apple’s share gain last year, which at nearly 50% was the smallest among the so-called Magnificent Seven stocks. Last month, Microsoft overtook Apple as the world’s most valuable company as the iPhone maker grapples with weakness in demand for its key products, especially in major market China.

Meanwhile, high interest rates have led to a slowdown in demand for usually pricier electric vehicles, prompting the industry to cut jobs and reduce production. Several major automakers, including EV market leader Tesla, have decided to pull back on investments, with some shifting plans to focus on hybrids instead of fully battery-powered cars.

Project Titan

Apple kicked off Project Titan, as its car effort was known internally, a decade ago, as a wave of interest in self-driving vehicles swept through Silicon Valley. Reuters reported in 2020 that Apple was considering releasing its proposed car soon as 2024 or 2025.

Progress had been bumpy even before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the global automotive industry. Apple had laid off 190 workers from the group in 2019 after revamping its software approach.

The design of the concept car also changed from a radical, steering-wheel-free autonomous vehicle that would have been a departure from traditional automotive design to a more conventional car with advanced driver-assistance features. News of the project had initially raised hopes that Apple may replicate the success of the iPhone, whose fresh design and clean interface helped alter the handheld phone market.

Even iPhone sales, the main source of the company’s revenue, has started seeing a growth slowdown as rivals launch handsets with matching specs and competitive prices. Sales of iPad and Mac computers fell amid broader slump in demand for expensive gadgets.

SAF™ 3007 is the latest addition to the growing duplex family of Alleima, a super-duplex stainless steel grade developed for subsea umbilicals.

The new tube offers a safe, lighter, stronger and more efficient alternative to SAF™ 2507, the current standard. With superior strength, fatigue properties and excellent corrosion resistance, SAF™ 3007 delivers superior performance in harsh deepwater environments.

Alleima is a global manufacturer of high value-added products in advanced stainless steels and special alloys. Since the 1960s, the company has been at the forefront of developing modern duplex grades and now offers a broad portfolio.

The new tube product represents the next generation of super-duplex seamless tubing developed specifically for the offshore oil and gas industry. It builds on the success of market-leading SAF™ 2507 (UNS S32750), which has become the industry standard, and further advances the duplex revolution that Alleima pioneered decades ago.

Strong Energy Demand

“Across the globe, the demand for energy is growing strong. We see a rising tide of activity in the oilfields off the coast of Brazil, in the Gulf of Mexico, North Sea and Southeast Asia. Following a dip during Covid, this new surge comes, underscoring the need for reliable, cost-efficient energy production,” says John Tokaruk, Global Product Manager for umbilical tubing at Alleima.

“As the market leader in umbilical steel tubing, we often get requests for a material matching SAF™ 2507 in reliability, but with reduced costs, improved fatigue life and enhanced pressure handling. SAF™ 3007 (UNS S83072) accomplishes all this with a ‘less is more’ approach. Thinner tube walls, thanks to its superior strength and fatigue properties, results in lower cost per meter. It offers the excellent corrosion resistance of SAF™ 2507, and a similar microstructure, as well as simplified welding due to thinner walls,” explains John Tokaruk.

Pioneers Of Super Duplex

For more than 40 years, Alleima has been at the forefront of developing modern duplex grades, which are typically more than twice as strong as standard stainless steel, with superior corrosion resistance. Within the oil and gas sector, the company has been active for more than 60 years, supporting most major oil and gas companies, fabricators and service companies.

For example, one Alleima customer in the Gulf of Mexico relies on umbilicals connected to the world’s deepest spar, moored in waters with depths of 2,450 metres (8,000 feet). Under such extreme conditions, system pressures may run up to 20,000 psi or more.

These “dynamic” umbilicals are floating and twisting beneath the sea surface with high stress in chloride-rich environments – precisely the kind of harsh environments where Alleima specializes.

In the mid-1990s, Alleima pioneered the utilisation of high alloy SAF™ 2507 as a groundbreaking alternative to thermoplastic subsea umbilical tubing. In essence, umbilicals serve as a “lifeline” connecting surface installations with subsea critical infrastructure such as wellheads. They include hydraulic lines, chemical injection fluids and electrical cables for controlling and monitoring infrastructure.

160 Million Meters Sold

The optimisation of SAF™ 2507 for subsea umbilicals, coupled with the dedicated Alleima mill in Chomutov, Czech Republic, ensuring fully integrated production from a single melt of 80 % recycled steel in Sandviken, Sweden, guarantees high quality. The large reels, with long lengths of orbitally welded coils, soon set the industry standard. Over the past 30 years, Alleima has supplied more than 160 million metres (525 million feet) to all major fabricators and applications, equal to circling the world three times.

More Tungsten And Chrome

“To enhance the performance of SAF™ 2507, we fine-tuned the chemical composition. As a result, SAF™ 3007 features additional chromium at 30%, reduced molybdenum at 1% and, for the first time, Alleima introduces tungsten at 3.4% to the duplex family of tube alloys. The inclusion of tungsten in preference to molybdenum maintains the corrosion resistance after welding, which is crucial for the umbilical application. Taken together, these properties are ideal for ‘dynamic umbilicals’ that are floating and twisting below the ocean surface with high stress in chloride-rich environments,” says Charlotte Ulfvin, Senior R&D Researcher at Alleima.

“The launch of SAF™ 3007 marks the next step in our duplex evolution, fulfilling customer demands for a next generation umbilical tube with less material and thinner walls. Thanks to the refined chemical composition we provide a lighter tube that streamlines the entire manufacturing process. It will be made available in a broad size range by the end of 2024,” concludes Tom Eriksson, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D at Alleima.

Hannover Messe will take place from 22-26 April 2024. APMEN received insights about Artificial Intelligence (AI), renewable energies and hydrogen at the recent press conference.

Boosting competitiveness, protecting the climate, promoting prosperity – these are the major tasks facing industry today. Innovative technologies are the key to mastering these challenges. How can companies leverage automation, AI, renewable energies, and hydrogen?

Dr. Jochen Köckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe AG

“Geopolitical tensions, climate change, stagnating growth, high prices for energy and a shortage of skilled workers mean cost discipline and efficiency are currently the dominant themes in companies. At the same time, AI is leading to profound changes in the worlds of work in industry. Business leaders and trade associations are warning of a de-industrialization of Europe,” says Dr. Jochen Köckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe AG, describing the environment in which this year’s HANNOVER MESSE takes place.

“HANNOVER MESSE is more important than ever this year, because the economic environment has rarely been so volatile. In Hannover, technologies and solutions will be presented to enable industry to produce on a competitive and sustainable basis. The trade fair will be all about intelligent and carbon-neutral production, AI, hydrogen, and cross-sector energy solutions. For European companies in particular, HANNOVER MESSE will thus create a bulwark against the impending de-industrialisation of Europe,” says Köckler. “Our exhibitors will show that competitive industrial production is possible in Europe. However, this will require a regulatory framework that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship.”

The solution lies in the interplay of automation, digitalisation and electrification, broad cross-industry and cross-border cooperation, and a clear political course.

Köckler: “With the lead theme ‘Energising a Sustainable Industry’, 4,000 exhibitors, high-calibre representatives from politics and industry, and with Norway as the partner country, HANNOVER MESSE 2024 is the ideal platform for this.”

More than 300 economic delegations are expected to attend the trade fair, first and foremost the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, who will open HANNOVER MESSE together with the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre. In addition, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the German Minister of Economics, Robert Habeck, will use the world’s leading trade fair for industry to exchange ideas with representatives of the industrial sector.

“If Europe is to retain substantial and sustainable production and investment, then the amount of red tape must be urgently reduced, for example through faster planning and authorisation procedures,” Köckler appeals.

“Visitors to HANNOVER MESSE are looking for guidance on how they can use automation, artificial intelligence, renewable energies or hydrogen in a meaningful way. This is precisely the expertise that the exhibitors at HANNOVER MESSE can provide,” says Köckler.

The exhibiting companies include global tech giants such as Accenture, AWS, Bosch, DELL Technologies, Google, Microsoft, SAP, ServiceNow, Schneider Electric and Siemens as well as SME technology leaders such as Beckhoff, GP Joule, ebm-papst, Ericsson, Festo, Turck, Harting, ifm, igus, LAPP, Pepperl+Fuchs, Phoenix Contact, Rittal, Schunk, SEW-Eurodrive, Wago, WIBU and Ziehl-Abegg plus renowned research organizations such as the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and more than 300 industrial startups.

Artificial Intelligence: The Next Level Of Industrial Digitalisation

For more than a decade now, HANNOVER MESSE has been the most important trade fair for the digitalisation of industry. Artificial intelligence is now taking industrial digitalisation to the next level by revolutionising industry, making processes more efficient and adding value. By using AI, companies will be able to shorten development times while saving resources and energy.

“The speed at which AI solutions are finding their way into industry is breathtaking. Companies need to invest now and, above all, introduce their employees to the opportunities offered by AI, otherwise they will get left behind by the competition,” emphasizes Köckler.

“AI is the key to competitiveness and sustainability in industry.” Specific applications will be on show at HANNOVER MESSE: robots that can be controlled by voice, machines that automatically recognize defects; or systems that cut downtimes through predictive maintenance. Köckler: “In the near future, generative AI will be able to design machines. This will lead to fundamental changes in engineers’ job profiles – a subject that will also be discussed at HANNOVER MESSE.”

When Will The Hydrogen Economy Arrive?

With the increasing use of unpredictable renewable energy sources, hydrogen is increasingly coming to the fore as a suitable energy carrier for an emission-free economy. Around 500 exhibitors from the hydrogen and fuel cell industry will be showcasing their solutions in Hannover. This makes HANNOVER MESSE the world’s largest and most important trade fair for the topic of hydrogen.

Köckler: “Hydrogen offers enormous opportunities as the green energy carrier. However, the current pace of roll-out and scaling up is too slow.” Developing a hydrogen economy now requires bold political decisions to be taken in the regulatory area, intensive research and development for rapid implementation, and the development of the necessary infrastructure for scaling up. This is the only way that viable business models will be able to become established.

“At HANNOVER MESSE, we will be demonstrating what is technologically feasible, and creating the framework for discussions between representatives of politics and industry, hopefully allowing decisions to be taken on a specific road map towards a functioning hydrogen economy,” says Köckler.

Partner Country Norway: a Powerhouse For Energy And Digitalisation

Norway is using the global stage offered by HANNOVER MESSE to present itself as an innovative and reliable energy partner, among other things. The motto of the partner country is “Norway 2024: Pioneering the Green Industrial Transition”. This underscores Norway’s ambition to play a key role in the development of solutions in the fields of renewable energies, carbon-neutral production, carbon capture and the digitalization of industry.

At the “North Sea Energy Hub” conference on 23 April, politicians and experts from Norway and Germany will discuss the transition in energy policy, with a focus on general political conditions as well as technological developments and applications.

Köckler: “In Europe, Norway is a powerhouse for energy and digitalization. Which means it fits in perfectly with HANNOVER MESSE.”

European Union: Strong Economic Alliance

Two months before the European elections, the European Union will be presenting itself as a strong economic alliance at HANNOVER MESSE. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will get the program started with a speech at the opening ceremony on 21 April.

The EU program during the trade fair includes the “Investing in European Industry” conference on 22 April, at which representatives of industry will be able to discuss with EU politicians topics such as the Green Deal.
