Mazda Strengthens Car Production In Malaysia

Malaysia: Japanese automaker Mazda Motor Corporation is expanding its sales and vehicle production in Malaysia Mazda Strengthens Car Production In Malaysia, and has launched a locally made new model of the CX-5, which began production in August this year.

The car manufacturer has invested RM87 million (US$20.5 million) in its Malaysian plant in Kulim—a technology industrial park located in Kedah.

The investment will bring the company’s latest paint process to Malaysia and revamp the car body’s line. The vehicles are assembled in a dedicated section of the plant and are managed by Mazda Malaysia to ensure that the quality of vehicles is on par with that of the vehicles manufactured in Japan.

“We see Malaysia as an important production base in the ASEAN region and, with the aim of establishing a sturdy production system, we’ve worked closely with our business partners to develop manufacturing of Mazda cars here,” said Masatoshi Maruyama, managing executive officer, global production and business logistics, Mazda.

The automaker plans to ship the CX-5 model, in both right-hand drive and left-hand drive configurations to the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia and Myanmar. The colours available are: Soul Red Crystal, Machine Grey and Snowflake White Pearl Mica.

The Kulim plant first started operations in 2011, focussing on the local assembly of Mazda 3’s for sale within the country. In March 2013 it began the local assembly of CX-5 units for the Malaysian market, and in September of that same year, exported the Malaysian-made CX-5’s to Thailand as well.

The production at its Kulim plant has been undertaken by local company Inokom Corporation, and its production capacity is 20,000 units annually.
