Prior to this, Hyundai and Kia disclosed battery manufacturer information for their electric vehicles. Among imported car brands operating in Korea, BMW Korea released its battery information on 12 August 2024.
Mercedes-Benz Korea had previously said that it does not disclose information about its suppliers due to competition relations but it changed its stance as consumer concerns continued to mount after a fire in a Benz electric car in the underground parking lot of an apartment building in Cheongna-dong of Incheon.
In particular, when it was revealed that the Benz EQE vehicle that caught fire was initially reported to have a CATL battery through media outlets but was later found to be loaded with a Farasis battery, Benz EV owners became outraged and insisted on disclosing manufacturers of batteries in Benz electric vehicles. Farasis is the world’s 10th-ranked battery manufacturer in China.
According to data released by Mercedes-Benz, 13 out of the 16 electric vehicle models were equipped with Chinese batteries. The EQE 350+ which caught fire this time are equipped with Farasis batteries, regardless of their model years.
The EQE 300 is the only Benz electric vehicle model known to have batteries from the world’s No. 1 battery maker CATL which is also a Chinese battery maker. The other EQE models including the AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+ and EQE 350 4MATIC, also are loaded with Farasis batteries. So are the Mercedes-Benz EQE 500 4MATIC SUV and Mercedes-Benz EQS 350.
Moreover, the EQS SUV and the Maybach EQS SUV are powered with CATL batteries. Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles equipped with batteries from Korean company SK on include the EQB 300 4MATIC and EQA 250 (2023-2025 models). LG Energy Solutions batteries went into some past models such as the EQC 300 4MATIC.
Mercedes-Benz Korea has decided also to accept the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport’s special inspection recommendation to inspect all EQE vehicles known to have with Farasis batteries. Reportedly, the German carmaker will open a separate dedicated call center for a special free examination of Benz electric vehicles.
Following Hyundai, Kia, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the trend of disclosing battery information is expected to accelerate among automakers selling electric cars in Korea.
