How can manufacturers adapt to industry challenges in 2024? Helen Blomqvist, President Sandvik Coromant, discusses how manufacturers can embrace current industry trends to tackle challenges and remain resilient in 2024 and beyond.

Despite 2023 being a challenging year for manufacturers, global manufacturing output is set to achieve a compound annual growth rate of 3% between now and 2027 according to technology insight business Interact Analysis. From digitalisation and demand forecasting to economic uncertainty and emissions targets, 2023 presented several challenges for the manufacturing industry. However, these difficulties also provide opportunities for manufacturers to innovate and increase their competitiveness as the industry transforms.

Strengthened Sustainability Focus

The focus on reducing our environmental impact intensified in 2023, with IBM’s Institute for Business Value data showing 86% of companies now have a sustainability strategy in place. While this figure is promising, data shows that only around a third of businesses have acted on their strategy since its implementation.

2024 will hopefully see the rise of businesses treating sustainability as a priority. This is especially important within the manufacturing industry, which is responsible for one-fifth of global carbon emissions according to World Economic Forum data. Currently, the sector is not sustainable enough, and we can do a lot more.

Ensuring that sustainability is not just a strategic ambition but a tangible, integrated part of daily operations is key to reducing emissions and achieving green targets. By combining strategic alignment, employee engagement and continuous data-driven improvements, manufacturers can not only achieve environmental and social goals but also drive innovation, reduce costs and enhance the company’s reputation and competitiveness.

Sandvik Coromant’s new brand promise of Manufacturing Wellness is a multifaceted approach which aims to drive sustainable progress through impactful partnerships. Manufacturing Wellness is a relentless pursuit for improvement, made up of eight habits found in successful and resilient manufacturing companies.

Sustainability and eliminating waste are the third and fourth habits of this mindset, which allows us to drive sustainable progress towards a better tomorrow for people, industry and society at large. Another one of our eight habits that make up this movement is embracing new technology.

Sandvik Coromant aims to deliver a strong understanding about the value that technology adoption can have. Adopting advanced technology allows manufacturing companies to enhance efficiency, elevate product standards, minimise costs and remain at the forefront of a competitive landscape.

In doing so, they stand better prepared to anticipate and face challenges as and when they arrive. Through the integration of new technological solutions, manufacturers can optimise their operations, embrace automation and maintain a leading position in a swiftly changing sector.

Patrik Eurenius, Head of Sustainability and EHS at metal cutting tools and manufacturing solutions expert Sandvik Coromant, explains the importance of measuring manufacturing sustainability as the company launches its new analyser tool.

Historically, the way that companies measure sustainability has been subject to accusations that it is fluff rather than fact. That’s because, in the past, metrics haven’t been held in the same regard as other business metrics, such as financial data. But that’s all set to change.

At the UN’s COP28 climate conference in 2023, world leaders debated what an agreement to end the use of fossil fuels could look like. In the end, it was agreed the world would work towards “transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems in a just, orderly and equitable manner”.

While a step away from initial discourse around the complete ‘phasing out’ of fossil fuels, the very inclusion of fossil fuels in net zero plans was seen as a landmark moment. Accounting for one-fifth of global carbon emissions and 54% of the world’s energy usage, tackling fossil fuel reliance in the manufacturing and production sector will undoubtedly support global environmental goals.

The Detail Is In The Data

Businesses that focus on sustainability tend to see great rewards. Embedding metrics such as waste generation, carbon emissions and energy usage into business strategy is essential to meeting customer demand, regulatory requirements and investor preferences.

An emphasis on sustainability has also been proven to attract top talent, reduce costs and boost financial profits. However, despite its benefits, businesses still struggle to showcase their credentials. Research published by the World Economic Forum revealed that, while 90% of executives believe sustainability is important, only 60% of organisations have sustainability strategies in place.

What’s the biggest sticking point? To paraphrase Drucker, what’s not being measured, simply cannot be improved upon. To reduce reliance on fossil fuels, tackle greenhouse gas emissions and limit the production of waste, manufacturers need access to the right data.

technotrans presented their efficient and resource-preserving spray lubrication systems for punching and forming applications at this year’s Blechexpo — stressing the importance of sustainability.

The company exhibited a homogeneous minimum-quantity spray lubrication system using less than 0.5 g of oil per m², and a particularly robust variant of the spray.xact c with a new housing structure, among other products. technotrans provided insights into the development of a system solution for hot-melt applications.

Expanding the product portfolio enlarges the application spectrum of technotrans products and provides users with more flexibility. Potential application areas for these spray lubrication systems include cold rolling processes, the forming of aluminium, and tool lubrication, among other processes.

The Draw Of Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is a core benefit of this system. By reducing friction and heat generation, energy-efficient spray lubrication directly contributes to lower power consumption in industrial processes. This translates to substantial savings in energy costs, making it a compelling choice for companies aiming to improve their environmental footprint and reduce operational expenses simultaneously.

“The aspect of sustainability has also become a driving force in punching and forming technologies. The economical use of energy and resources is one of the most important objectives today in metalworking companies,” says Hary Kosciesza, Business Development Manager at technotrans.

“Our spray lubrication systems help users to verifiably reduce their ecological footprint.”

The solutions provided by technotrans work with high-frequency valves and without the use of compressed air to ensure a precise and mist-free application of oil. The use of an extraction system is no longer needed, and no oil that could otherwise enter the production environment is wasted. Machine cleaning and maintenance work are consequently reduced to a minimum.

The term “sustainability” has become increasingly popular in recent years — frequently seen in headlines, featured in forms of news media, scientific research, and practical seminars. Is this word merely a trending or the question of the hour?

The emphasis on sustainability stems from global growing awareness intended for critical environmental issues and climate change, largely caused by human activity. The focus on sustainability reflects our deep commitment to the principles of securing a better future for the planet and generations to come.

Consequently, sustainability has gained prominence in various fields, ranging from everyday life and business to transportation, urban planning, and manufacturing. Manufacturing should unquestionably be sustainable.

Today, there is widespread recognition and agreement regarding the correctness of this statement. Manufacturing processes consume natural resources, energy, create waste, and pollute the environment. We can mitigate the negative environmental impact only by adopting sustainable production technologies.

Cutting Tools — Key To Sustainability

Machining remains a primary method for producing parts of machines and mechanisms. Therefore, the question of how to make machining sustainable is more relevant than ever.

A cutting tool contacts the machined workpiece directly and shapes it to its required form, removing the rest of the unnecessary material in the form of metal chips. Can a cutting tool be a key factor for improving sustainability? The answer to the above question is undoubtedly a resounding, yes!

Anders Micski, Manager of Grades and Technology for Business Unit solid round tools (SRT) at Sandvik Coromant, explains how an advanced tool coating can support more sustainable machining.

Research by Schneider Electric and Omdia found 49% of manufacturing companies expect improved performance and cost savings when investing in sustainability. While the conversation around manufacturing sustainability usually focuses on Industry 4.0 solutions, companies must not overlook the significant role that machine tools like coated solid carbide end mills play.

Machine shops now realise that a proper sustainability strategy differentiates success and failure — especially in light of today’s continuing supply chain challenges, and shortages both of materials, knowledge and skills. However, roadblocks stand in the way of manufacturing becoming more sustainable.

Almost a third of manufacturing leaders surveyed by Schneider Electric and Omdia said their organisations legacy assets and infrastructure are an obstacle to becoming greener. 27% identified cost or budget is a key roadblock, and 19% cited culture change as a challenge, or the risk of changing their existing processes.

Manufacturers should consider the significant advantages of better machine tools on production sustainability. Longer tool life can certainly support sustainable machining and ties into a number of other advantages, including reducing the number of tools required in a production run and reducing the need for costly tool replacements.

Another advantage of longer-lasting tools is the ability to produce more versatile products for two reasons. First, a tool with a longer lifespan can be used for a greater number of production cycles before it needs to be replaced or serviced. Second, with longer tool life, the tool maintains its precision and performance over an extended period, which results in improved quality and consistency of the products being produced.

Continuous urbanisation drive and construction activities will spur power tool demands in Southeast Asia, according to Roland Berger’s Timothy Wong, Principal, Lead of Southeast Asia Industrial Practice.

“In Southeast Asia, continuous urbanisation drive and construction activities will drive power tool demands, particularly for the professional categories. Product and service innovation and cost optimisation are critical to be competitive,” Timothy remarked.

The power tool industry experienced a demand surge in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic as people spent more time at home and took on home improvement projects. Professional end markets such as construction and industry also witnessed a demand, leading to a boost for power tool players.

However, this situation was not sustainable, and in 2022, revenue growth lost its momentum. Multiple challenges from changing macroeconomic perspectives and market dynamics led to a sharp profitability decrease for many leading power tool players. Sven Siepen, Steffen Thiel and Stefan Kriger of Roland Berger too offer their success strategies for the industry.

5 Key Drivers Causing Lost Momentum And Falling Profits

Roland Berger’s research identified five critical areas power tool players must address to maintain growth and profitability:

  • Market slowdown and pricing pressure
  • Global footprint strategy and supply chain risks
  • Evolving customer behavior and sales approaches
  • Sustainability challenges, and
  • Battery technology and innovation

A spectacular display of innovations, high levels of global visitor interest, and a great atmosphere in the halls: “After four years, the relaunch has been a huge success for EMO Hannover,” sums up EMO Commissioner General Carl Martin Welcker after six days in Hannover.

Its strengths included the internationality of the exhibitors and visitors, and the fair once again provided a perfect platform for top-class technical innovations.

“We saw everything here for the future of production: new solutions for automation, for networking within the factory and for sustainable production. When digitalisation finds its way into the factory, there is no end to the potential for new solutions and increased efficiency. This was impressively demonstrated by the exhibitors. And there was a positive mood at the event, despite the tense economic situation,” continues Welcker.

Around 1,850 exhibitors attended, with roughly 70% coming from 45 different countries, including China, Italy, Taiwan, Switzerland and Japan. Of the approximately 92,000 trade visitors, 54% came from 130 countries. Here, the five largest visitor countries were Turkey, China, the Netherlands, Italy and Poland. Around one third of the trade visitors came from Asia.

Günter Szerenczés, Member of the Executive Board of Israeli tool manufacturer Iscar, says: “EMO is once again a triumph, attracting a highly international audience from a wide range of industries. Visitors have been specifically asking about innovations.”

The visitor survey reveals that 30% of visitors gave “obtaining information about innovations and trends” as their top priority. A further goal was finding concrete solutions for their specific problems.

Dr. Jochen Kress, Managing Partner, Mapal Präzisionswerkzeuge Dr. Kress KG, Germany, says: “The main focus of the discussions we’ve been having is on customer-specific aspects. And the EMO is just the right platform for strengthening the cooperation between customers and suppliers, I think.” Dr. Matthias Klein, CSO of the Emag Group adds: “We have seen an overwhelming level of interest in the innovative solutions and machines of the Emag Group. In particular our solutions presented for machining electric vehicle powertrain components met with great interest. Overall, we are more than satisfied with the response from the market.”

Focus On Automation, Digitalisation And Sustainability

The shortage of skilled workers was a further reason why automation was a clear focus of the trade fair. Over one-third of visitors cited this as a key issue for the industry. Almost a quarter mentioned digitalisation and networking. They were able to find just what they were looking for on the many stands.

Several hundred robots were counted at EMO. A new aspect is that it is no longer necessary to have programming skills in order to use cobots (collaborative robots) for different applications such as loading and unloading, quality control, painting, washing, as well as connecting to measuring devices.

The cobots are equipped with sensors that mimic the human sense of touch. This allow them to compensate for workpiece tolerances or work around obstacles in the workspace.

In collaboration with employees, this facilitates enclosure-free operation, for example. This trend also means that robot manufacturers are currently doing good business. “Cobots are continuing to enjoy rising popularity in manufacturing, especially in smaller companies that are now struggling to find staff,” says Nils Tersteegen, Marketing Manager at Japanese vendor Fanuc.

Another focus is on connectivity. The main emphasis here is on the open exchange of data – based on OPC UA, for example. This is the basis for the Companion Specification OPC UA for Machine Tools under the umati umbrella.

Retrieving large amounts of data from digital controls without affecting the process is a key factor here. The availability of transparent process data is crucial for process monitoring and related quality management.

The Future of Sustainability in Production was high on the agenda for 68% of visitors. Foreigners accounted for three quarters of this group, meaning that they were more strongly represented than their German counterparts.

A key aspect was efficiency. Some examples: The Product Carbon Footprint indicates the level of carbon emissions during production and provides customers with detailed information on what indirect emissions the tools they use contribute to their overall carbon footprint. Another example is the structure of spindles which are designed for energy efficiency and not primarily for maximum performance. Finally, cooling lubricants can be used for longer through monitoring and filtering.

Dr. Hubert Ermer, Managing Director for Products and Markets at Dr. Johannes Heidenhain GmbH, Germany, summarizes. “Digitalisation and automation are continuing to develop at a rapid pace. The overall aim is to ensure reliable manufacturing processes. This increases productivity while also reducing the carbon footprint. EMO has given us a platform to discuss the specific challenges of transformative manufacturing processes with our customers and to provide them with full support.”

High Number Of First-Time Visitors

More than half of the visitors to the EMO were attending for the first time, the exhibition company claimed. This dovetailed nicely with the exhibitors’ goal of attracting new customer business.

Dr. Karsten Röttger, CEO at Ecoroll AG of Germany, says: “Many visitors became aware of us for the first time. They hadn’t even considered the possibilities of mechanical surface finishing. Our tools allow them to meet the increasing product quality requirements, but above all the higher demand for sustainable products.”

Around one fifth of the exhibitors were also at the event for the first time.

Representing this group, Jörg Rommelfanger, head of ABB’s Robotics Division, Germany, says: “This year’s EMO provided the ideal platform for showcasing our latest technologies and solutions for the industry for the first time. These included a machine loading cell specially designed for the fast and automated removal of randomly arranged workpieces. There was tremendous interest, and the numerous conversations and demonstrations we conducted were fruitful and inspiring.”

EMO Is The Trade Fair For Decision Makers

It is important for exhibitors to be seen at EMO Hannover, to showcase their offerings and to demonstrate competence. EMO is therefore a trade fair for executives and decision-makers from the mechanical engineering, automotive and supplier industries, metal processing, precision mechanics, optics, the aerospace industry and many more.

Almost 60% of the visitors are executives or come from top management. Just under half have decision-making authority for purchasing and procurement. Indeed, half of the trade visitors actually stated that they came to EMO with concrete investment plans.

On average, these visitors planned to invest just under €3 million. More than a quarter said they had placed orders at the fair.

Stephan Nell, CEO of the United Grinding Group from Switzerland, can also report on this: “The number of leads is currently at the same level as in 2019. Some machine contracts were also signed directly at the trade show booth.” Another quarter of visitors intends to place orders after the trade show, according to the survey.

“EMO Hannover has once again confirmed and consolidated its position as the world’s leading trade fair for production technology,” Welcker concludes. He is looking forward to the next event, which will doubtless attract even more exhibitors in two years’ time once the economy has improved.
