China has officially jumped into the AI Chatbot bandwagon. Baidu Inc, the search engine giant launched ERNIE 4.0, Baidu’s next-generation and most powerful foundation model offering drastically enhanced core AI capabilities.

Baidu also showcased some of its most popular applications, solutions, and products re-built around the company’s state-of-the-art generative AI.

“ERNIE 4.0 has achieved a full upgrade with drastically improved performance in understanding, generation, reasoning, and memory,” Robin Li, Co-founder, Chairman and CEO of Baidu, said at the event. “These four core capabilities form the foundation of AI-native applications and have now unleashed unlimited opportunities for new innovations.”

In his keynote, Li showcased the new ERNIE Bot powered by ERNIE 4.0 through extensive demonstrations of its four core AI capabilities. ERNIE Bot is able to “Understand” and provide answers to complex and even disorganised human requests, as well as interpreting hidden messages.

ERNIE can also “Generate” a range of content, including text, images, and videos, in just a few minutes, based on one simple text prompt and image input. Li further demonstrated ERNIE Bot’s ability to “Reason” by having it solve complex geometry problems. Lastly, ERNIE Bot’s ability to “Memorize” and integrate incremental inputs was demonstrated by writing a short story and regularly adding new information as ERNIE was in process of writing the story.

Dr. Haifeng Wang, Chief Technology Officer of Baidu, said ERNIE 4.0 started beta version testing in September based on a limited amount of user input, and has since seen its overall performance improved by almost 30%. ERNIE 4.0 is now accessible to invited users on ERNIE Bot, and the API will be available upon application to enterprise clients via Qianfan foundation model platform.

The emergent intelligence brought by foundation models and large language models (LLMs) unlocks unprecedented avenues for innovative applications. Baidu adopted an AI-native approach to re-build its family of apps, solutions, and products, including Baidu Search, Baidu GBI, Infoflow, Baidu Wenku, Baidu Drive and Baidu Maps. This revamp has sparked creativity, leading to delightful and diverse user interactions.

Ever since the ChatGPT became available, it became a tool for misuse everywhere. Where does that leave machinists who are genuinely well-versed and good in what they do?

There are plenty of A.I. powered chatbots in the market but ChatGPT being the most common has achieved notoriety for the wrong reasons. Call it collateral damage or otherwise, this tool has become so convenient that people have chosen to abuse it.

Recently, a man was arrested using ChatGPT to fabricate a train crash in China. The arrest reportedly took place in the northern province of Gansu, according to a WeChat posted police report.

Hong apparently used ChatGPT to create news stories about a train accident that left several people dead, and then posted the fake articles on Baijiahao, a blog-style creation platform created by Chinese internet giant Baidu. ChatGPT is illegal in China.

The specific crime Hong has been accused of however, is “picking quarrels and provoking trouble,” punishable by up to five years in prison, according to Bloomberg. Prior to that, a Chief Editor got shown the door when her A.I. fabricated interview got discovered involving a world famous racer who never gave an interview after waking up from his coma.

The Microsoft-backed OpenAI launched last November has successfully cemented its spot in many industries. Other tech giants rushing to launch their own versions proved this pioneer chatbot is a force to be reckoned with.

The metalworking industry is showing signs of reliance on this ChatGPT especially in G coding, as it reduces time and effort to generate complex gcodes. Accuracy is touted to be guaranteed except it would not be wise to put all the bets on it given it is prone to errors as well.

Hence, if chatbots become a wonder-tool for just about every industry, even the most seasoned machinist would at some point worry about his future. There could potentially but industry consolidation — software players would become redundant and this could be disastrous for the whole sector.

Ever since OpenAI got accessible, it became a staple for many professionals to find solutions if not alternatives to improve their work. As at 30 March 2023, ChatGPT reportedly registered over 100 million users, including that from metalworking industry.

A knee-jerk reaction followed with many wondering if the chatbot is going to replace jobs. A ray of sunshine pierced through when the truth of the chatbot bobbed up — it is still controlled by humans.

It is not uncommon to find plenty of jokes and memes online involving ChatGPT. One of them noted a student got busted after blindly copying everything the chatbot generated into her paper. However, nothing beats Samsung’s semiconductor division’s fiasco of leaking confidential coding data while using the chatbot to improve coding.

Google is a tool for many for research and information gathering, while the chatbot is just saving the steps of going through every entry for relevant data. Nonetheless, it is known that information off the internet can be inaccurate and even plagarised from other genuine sources.

However, OpenAI’s ChatGPT is smart enough to dish a disclaimer that its data collected was till September 2021 and unable to provide any beyond that date. There is the cutoff, and the chatbot remains active in mining global data quietly before releasing an enhanced version to generate revenue.

There are other chatbots in the market which are paid services and claim to be updated with the latest information. It is still anybody’s guess how much manpower is required to verify the data authenticity to warrant the subscription.

Back to the question, is the chatbot really a threat? It is when a human is incapable of improvising/improving/innovating enough and needs a software to get work done. It is also a threat towards those who are genuinely learned and knowledgeable — especially machining coding for our industry.

To be classed in the bottom league by others who seemingly “work smart” with chatbots is plain unacceptable. What if you realise work generated by a chatbot contains your unique signature, can you file for an infringement of copyright claim?

G-code is the most commonly used programming language, allowing programmers to control the various movements and functions of CNC tools. However, with concerns over data security and the potential for data mining, caution should be exercised when accessing tools like ChatGPT for improving coding.

Axios reported engineers and programmers across many industries have found great utility in refining code or double-checking their work by running it through ChatGPT. However, there has not been a lot of transparency around the collection of that data, where it goes or how it could potentially be used.

Using ChatGPT in corporate settings is about to get a lot easier after Salesforce unveiled plans this week to integrate the large language model chatbot into Slack. Salesforce isn’t alone. Several technology companies, including Snap, have been racing to integrate generative AI into their consumer-facing products and tools.

Increasingly, employers are getting nervous about how employees might use ChatGPT at work. Walmart and Amazon have both reportedly warned employees not to share confidential information in the chatbot.

An Amazon corporate lawyer told employees the company has already seen instances of ChatGPT responses that are similar to internal Amazon data, according to Insider. JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Verizon have reportedly blocked employee access to the online tool.

Meanwhile, OpenAI changed its terms of service so its models no longer use user inputs by default to train amid growing concerns about privacy risks. 2.3% of workers have put confidential company information into ChatGPT, according to a recent report from Cyberhaven. Samsung’s is the latest to be in the hot seat when one of their core divisions had confidential coding data retained by the chatbot (unknowingly).

Another Camp For It

In another side of the world, there is a camp that found the chatbot to be performing better than humans in predicting stock performances! A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Florida shows that ChatGPT, a large language model, can accurately forecast stock market returns using sentiment analysis of news headlines. However, it failed to acknowledge the chatbot’s pool of data cuts off at September 2021.

Business Today reported The study, titled “Return Predictability and Large Language Models,” found that ChatGPT outperformed traditional sentiment analysis methods provided by leading vendors. The researchers leveraged ChatGPT’s sentiment analysis capabilities to analyse news headlines and predict whether they were good, bad, or irrelevant news for firms’ stock prices.

They then computed a numerical score and documented a positive correlation between these “ChatGPT scores” and subsequent daily stock market returns. The research has significant implications for the finance industry. According to the paper, this finding has the potential to shift the methods used for market prediction and investment decision-making.

Doubts In Confidence

However, no further details were revealed on the mechanics of the chatbot’s predictions. After Samsung’s recent fiasco with ChatGPT regarding its semiconductors, the biggest revelation was the chatbot was actively mining data from sources (discreetly)? The fact that its reliability is under scrutiny is incriminating for the financial sector to be supremely cautious about predicting stock performances.

Applying the cut off date to the chatbot where it is quick to dish a disclaimer on the limitations of information availability, it is plausible predictions were based on standard mathematical methodologies and theories. Martingale is the mathematical method of predicting the future price of a stock based on the stock’s current price. According to this theory, past returns or results do not matter in present scenarios and predict future prices. This concept is part of probability theory. Hence, what it projects could potentially be based on outdated data.

Applying this to metalworking; for CNC, programmers are responsible for the proper operation and programming of CNC machines using CNC programming that allows sending instructions to motorised tools. CNC programming plays a crucial role in ensuring efficient and accurate machine operation.

The most common programming language used to run CNC machines is G-code (also known as G programming). With G-code, a programmer can control various movements and functions of a CNC tool

Where does it leave the machine tool sector where programming is instrumental in ensuring efficiency and accuracy? If engineers accessed ChatGPT for improving coding, they are not protected from having their data mined and disseminated.

Samsung is planning to develop their own ChatGPT for cybersecurity. When such drastic actions are in the pipeline, industries should exercise caution — using the tool for consultation purposes without compromising the organisation’s integrity.
