Siemens & Sony partnership to enable immersive engineering

Siemens and Sony Corporation (Sony) are partnering to introduce a new solution that combines the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio of industry software with Sony’s new spatial content creation system, featuring the XR head-mounted display with high-quality 4K OLED Microdisplays and controllers for intuitive interaction with 3D objects. Enabling designers and engineers to create and explore design concepts in a borderless immersive workspace, the new solution will kickstart content creation for the industrial metaverse. Expected to be available later in 2024, Siemens’ NX™ Immersive Designer, an integrated solution that combines Siemens’ NX software and Sony technology, brings immersive design and collaborative product engineering capabilities to Siemens’ flagship product engineering solution.

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) projects that Malaysia’s TIV for 2024 will be 800,000 units, a 4.57% increase from the previous estimate of 765,000 units. Nov 2024 total industry volume (TIV) grew 1.4% YoY to 731k, and accounted for 91.4% of the Malaysia Automotive Association’s (MAA) FY24 forecast

Looking deeper at 11M24 PVs, certain Japanese brands, like Honda, are still holding up, while Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Nissan, Lexus and Toyota lagged amidst rising Chinese (CN) brands. CLSA estimate TIV to fall 6% to 750k in 2025 due to slower national car sales with Chinese brands to make further share gains.

Hexagon acquires inspection and 3D modelling software capabilities from 3D System

Hexagon today announced the acquisition of 3D Systems’ Geomagic suite of interoperable software packages, which are used to create high quality 3D models from multiple sources, including laser scanning.

The Geomagic suite, which includes products such as Design X, Control X, Freeform and Wrap, is capable of automating the processing of 3D scan data to build digital models from physical objects, which can then be used to generate history based parametric CAD models for use in product manufacturing. The Geomagic software tools can also be used to undertake initial free-form design, modify existing CAD models and to accurately measure and inspect parts for quality control purposes when finished. The acquired capabilities will strengthen the existing software portfolio of Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence and combine with its leadership in portable metrology sensors to deliver a sophisticated suite of solutions across the full range of manufacturing applications.

“The combination of Geomagic and our existing solutions will further strengthen our market leadership in 3D metrology and reengineering, demonstrating our commitment to deliver increasingly user friendly tools capable of executing complex tasks, so our customers can bring innovative, high quality products to the market at speed and with confidence. Hexagon will pay a purchase price of $123M for the Geomagic software business, on a cash and debt free basis. In 2023, the acquired software business had around 100 employees, generated revenues of around $30M and delivered operating margins accretive to those of the Manufacturing Intelligence division. Completion of the transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions, which are expected to be fully completed by early in the second quarter of 2025.

Konecranes supplies cranes to support VinFast’s electric vehicle production in Vietnam

Konecranes has supplied five 25-ton CXT Double Girder Cranes to Vietnam’s VinFast Auto Ltd., bringing the total number of cranes delivered to the automaker to 25. This latest order, which also includes TRUCONNECT Remote Monitoring, was placed in June 2024, with testing and commissioning currently in its final stages.

To help scale up production capabilities, Konecranes has equipped VinFast’s latest manufacturing facility with five 25-ton CXT Double Girder Cranes featuring TRUCONNECT Remote Monitoring. This technology provides real-time data and insights on crane performance and usage through advanced sensors and connectivity. Accompanied by a three-year maintenance contract, this setup will enhance the safety and productivity of VinFast’s crane operations. Additionally, the cranes are equipped with dual hoists on a single trolley and a 120-meter runway, enabling seamless integration into VinFast’s production workflow.

Thai motorcycle exports surge 157% in October to 6.5 billion baht

In October, motorcycle exports, including both completely knocked down (CKD) and completely built-up (CBU) units, experienced a substantial surge of 157% compared to the previous year, reaching 175,066 units. This marks a significant increase from the 68,136 units exported in the same month last year. The export value also rose, climbing 16.6% year-on-year to 6.5 billion baht, up from 6 billion baht in October of the previous year.

Despite this impressive growth in October, the overall performance for the first ten months of the year reflects a different story. Total motorcycle exports declined by 15.8%, amounting to 776,362 units. The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) did not specify the reasons for this decline. However, it aligns with a similar trend observed in the first seven months of 2024, where export volumes dropped by 10.1% year-on-year to 473,075 units.

2024 highlights

Throughout the year, Seco focused on two key pilot areas:

  • Turning Inserts: An initiative launched in Fagersta, Sweden, enables Seco to assess the environmental impact of a large portion of its insert portfolio.
  • Round Tools: A pilot with a start-up company in Lottum, the Netherlands established a scalable LCA process for Solid End Mills, setting the foundation for future advancements.

These results set the standard for providing information on the environmental impact of tooling on component manufacturing by providing key figures on the impact of purchased tools and connecting these results with cutting data. These initiatives, along with programs like Reconditioning Program and Used Carbide Recycling Program, emphasize Seco’s commitment to driving sustainable solutions for manufacturing.

Next steps

In 2025, Seco will expand LCA coverage to include more of its portfolio and enhance MyPages with additional sustainability data. The Seco MyPages environment is a versatile online platform that offers various services, like quick quotations, effortless product searches or tool recommendations. It enhances customer experience by providing a centralized space for easy access to critical information.

By utilizing LCA as a service in demos and testing, Seco enables partners to conduct feasibility studies and tests with a strong focus on sustainability.

TRUMPF has expanded its aluminum portfolio for additive manufacturing. “The new aluminum alloys can be used in numerous 3D printing applications, from prototyping to series production. Users benefit from the typical advantages of 3D printing, such as lightweight construction, material savings, and a large degree of control in component design. The quality of the printed parts is at least as good as that of machined ones,” says Jan Christian Schauer, responsible for additive manufacturing material selection at TRUMPF. The expanded aluminum portfolio includes alloys that are suitable for the automotive, motorsports, aerospace and bicycle industries. In Frankfurt, the high-tech company will present sample parts at the world’s leading trade fair for 3D printing, Formnext.

The right aluminum alloy for every application

TRUMPF is working closely with customers from various industries to integrate the new alloys into their applications. “The variety of aluminum variants allows customers to use the best alloy for their particular application. It is not possible to cover all requirements with a single aluminum alloy. That’s why TRUMPF offers this broad portfolio,” says Schauer. The aerospace industry, for example, requires high-strength alloys, while the automotive industry relies on alloys that are particularly cost-effective. In the bicycle industry, especially in frame construction, the aluminum alloy 6061 has established itself, but thus far only in conventional manufacturing processes. Now, frame manufacturers can also use this alloy in TRUMPF 3D printers.

TSMC presents the Excellent Performance Award to suppliers that have made remarkable contributions to its technology leadership and manufacturing with advanced semiconductor processes over the past year. At the award ceremony, TSMC Chairman & CEO Dr. C.C. Wei thanked suppliers for delivering timely and high-quality professional services to drive continuous improvement of the supply chain and related industries.

Pimel has been used for worldwide semiconductor applications such as buffer coatings, passivation layers for bumping, and dielectric layers for re-distribution bumping. As semiconductor technology continues to advance, the demand for materials like Pimel has grown, with these applications becoming increasingly vital in supporting the evolution of more complex and compact semiconductor devices.

Nobuko Uetake, Lead Executive Officer of Asahi Kasei and Senior General Manager of its Digital Solutions Administration, commented, “It is a great honor for Asahi Kasei to receive this award.
