Hybrid Manufacturing Processes Used Producing Complex Parts (Part 1)

Naiara P. V. Sebbe, Filipe Fernandes, Vitor F. C. Sousa and Francisco J. G. Silva offer a comprehensive review on the facets of various process combinations (hybrid machining), beginning with additive manufacturing (AM) and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining.

Standard manufacturing methods lost their traction to advanced ones for profitability. Hybrid manufacturing combines two or more distinct processes in a single piece of equipment.

There are several types of hybrid manufacturing, although the most common combines laser additive manufacturing (AM) and 5-axis machining processes. The paper reviews hybrid manufacturing and analyses various AM processes, including binder blasting, directed energy deposition, material extrusion, material jetting, powder bed fusion, sheet laminating, and vat polymerization, and their sub-classifications.

It also highlights the importance of 5-axis machining in hybrid manufacturing. integration between additive and subtractive processes, the challenges faced, and future opportunities.

1. Additive Manufacturing (AM)

AM enables producing 3D geometric parts through layer overlay. However, high costs resulted in low adoption. Hence, 5-axis machining is used, enabling a single configuration to machine five sides of the part, resulting in high accuracy and surface quality.

A flexible, sophisticated yet challenging technology, AM uses wire or powder as raw material, and the part is produced based on a computer-aided design (CAD) project’s geometry.
