Walter expands its Thrill·tec TC645 Supreme range

Following the successful introduction of the Thrill·tec TC645 Supreme orbital drill/thread mills for dimensions from M4 to M12 in 2023, Walter is now expanding its range to cover additional metric dimensions from M14 to M20 as well as their imperial equivalents. These boast the same technical properties as the established versions – most importantly the ability to carry out drilling, chamfering and thread milling with just one tool. But for the first time, users are now also able to benefit from the exceptional efficiency of this 3-in-1 function for larger thread dimensions too. For instance, the longer paths of the machining program, which are common for large components, now only have to be traveled once instead of three times. This reduces non-productive time by two thirds.

Like all Thrill·tec orbital drill/thread mills, the new versions are also ultra rigid, suitable for universal use in all ISO materials P, M, K, N and S up to 48 HRC and boast integrated internal coolant. This enables reliable chip removal, especially with a high feed per tooth, extends tool life and ensures that blind holes and through holes are machined with both precision and process reliability. The combination of short machining times and long tool life reduces the cost per thread and means that the tools provide benefits both for mass producers and for users with smaller batch sizes. Walter offers special dimensions for delivery with a reduced delivery time of three weeks via its Walter Xpress service. In addition to the versatility, this means that users from a wide range of industries, such as mechanical engineering, aerospace or automotive construction, can also benefit from the rapid availability of the tools.

Tungaloy’s DrillMeister exchangeable-head drill line now includes new TID type drills in cylindrical shanks that accommodate drill head diameters ranging from 10.0 mm to 19.9 mm (from .398″ to .783″).

Tungaloy DrillMeister features a unique self-locking interface that interlocks between the drill head and shank body, enabling a simple and quick tool exchange. Operators can replace the drill head without having to remove the drill body from the adapter or re-measure tool offset vales, thus saving time. The drill head can be easily assembled while remaining on the machine. The drill body incorporates strong helical flutes with polished surfaces for reliable chip evacuation. This feature is especially important in deep hole drilling applications where smooth chip evacuation is vital.

The new Tungaloy TID drills are offered with a cylindrical shank. A precision-ground cylindrical shank with no flats provides a close runout accuracy and high torque transmission when clamped with a full surface contact in a high-precision collet chuck, milling chuck, or hydro-chuck holder.

In addition, all the new drills have longer shank lengths (LS) than the existing TID drill lines. Longer shanks enable more flexible adjustment of a drill overhang length when being clamped in the holder.

Hole making operations often require drills with a flute length that is way longer than the hole depth to be machined, just to avoid a fixture or structural interference. The new Tungaloy TID drill can provide an extended drill overhang by shifting out the shank clamping position in the holder, while retaining a minimum flute length necessary for smooth chip evacuation and tool stability.

Enhanced with the new drill line, Tungaloy DrillMeister provides customers with high productivity, reduced of tool inventory and elimination of regrinding costs.

Sandvik Coromant has unveiled two new solid carbide drills designed to improve consistency and performance during hole-making operations on workpieces made from challenging aerospace materials such as heat-resistant super alloys (HRSAs), titanium alloys and composites.

The new CoroDrill 860 solid carbide drill with -SM geometry has been developed to provide robust process security, high hole integrity and excellent tool life, making it the first choice for safeguarding quality when performing hole making in ISO S materials like HRSAs, which include Inconel, Waspalloy, Hastelloy and Udimet.

A new grade, 1210, which also features a new coating, is available for Sandvik Coromant’s CoroDrill 860 solid carbide drill with -SM geometry that is designed to ensure a major reduction in flank wear compared with existing solutions. The result is a consistent and reliable cutting edge, which in turn delivers excellent dimensional accuracy and better finished hole tolerance. For this reason, the drill is also ideal for unmanned production, where users can expect to see a significant reduction in component scrap rates. Moreover, overall cost-per-hole will be reduced.

Key aerospace applications where the CoroDrill 860 solid carbide drill with -SM geometry will excel are set to include bosses and scallop/flange face features on casings, as well other features on low-pressure/high-pressure turbine disks and blisks. The assortment, which features internal coolant capability throughout, extends from 2xD to 5xD, in diameters from 3mm to 16mm (0.118in to 0.63in).

Also released is the CoroDrill 863 solid carbide drill with -O geometry, an optimised solution for composite aerospace workpieces. Offering excellent tool life and very high hole integrity, the substrate is based on a new grade, O1AD, for improved wear resistance. A high axial rake angle is included for reduced delamination in unidirectional CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic).

Tool life is improved significantly when using the CoroDrill 863 solid carbide drill with -O geometry, with increases in material drilled often measured in metres. Fewer tool changes are therefore a further benefit of using this repeatable and reliable drill. Typical composite parts set to benefit will include aircraft frames, wingboxes, fuselage sections, stabilizers, floor beams and flaps. The assortment is available from 4xD to 5xD, in diameters from 3mm to 10mm (0.118in to 0.393in).

]]>
The CoroDrill DS20 from cutting tool and tooling system specialist Sandvik Coromant is the first indexable drill concept capable of producing hole depths up to 7xD. The drill, which includes completely new designs for both the body and inserts, provides users with reliable, predicatable chip control and outstanding penetration rates in all 4-7xD applications.

Replacing the existing CoroDrill 880 and CoroDrill 881 tools, 4-5xD CoroDrill DS20 indexable drills provide tool life improvements of up to 25 percent and productivity gains up to 10 percent, depending on workpiece material. The 6-7xD variants represent an entirely new capability range of indexable drills from Sandvik Coromant. To complement the introduction, the company is releasing a new Modular Drilling Interface (MDI) that acts as a coupling between the drill and adaptor. Available in Coromant Capto and HSK shank types, the MDI provides high precision, excellent centring capabilities and reduced tool inventory.

CoroDrill DS20 indexable drills are both versatile and cost-efficient, increasing tool life and productivity in nearly all workpiece materials compared with current best-in-class concepts. No pilot drilling is needed.

“Amongst the most important factors when drilling to depths of more than 5xD is controlled cutting forces, secure chip evacuation and high centring capabilities,” explained Håkan Carlberg, Senior R&D engineer, Indexable drilling at Sandvik Coromant. “Going from a 5xD to a 7xD drill, the theoretical difficulty increases approximately three-fold due to an increased inclination to bend. Designing a CoroDrill DS20 7xD drill requires careful consideration for around 50 parameters that all depend on each other. The outcome is improved process security through lower forces and lighter cutting, particularly at entry. In turn, users achieve lower cost per hole, the ability to drill deeper and reduced sound levels.”

The drill body is strong and fatigue-resistant with higher levels of stiffness than ever achieved before, while chip flute shapes are individually designed for each drill size and insert. This combination of factors leads to less vibration, predictable wear patterns and increased tool life. In addition, next-generation ‘double-step’ technology reduces entry cutting forces by up to 75 percent compared with CoroDrill 880 tools to improve centring capabilities. Strong insert design and bulk strength provide extra toughness, with four true cutting edges provided on both centre and peripheral inserts.

Regarding the new MDI, double centring with high fitting accuracy enables good run-out precision and optimal repeatability. Here, flange and surface contact between the drill body and nut provides increased stability and promotes hole quality. One size can be used for several drill diameters.

CoroDrill DS20 indexable drills are available from 15mm to 65mm in diameter with a selection of shank types, insert sizes, grades and geometries to suit all material types and applications, including those found across the general engineering, automotive, oil and gas, pump and valve, and aerospace sectors.

The HAIMER Group will show how modern tool management works with high-quality, process-reliable components, consistent digitalisation and fully automated tool presetting using a robot cell at the upcoming EMO 2019 event in Hanover, Germany.

The HAIMER Group, one of the leaders for tool shrinking and balancing technology, has established itself as a system provider for complete tool management and is taking it step by step into the future. The basis is the high-quality product programme, which ranges from a wide variety of tool holders, shrinking and balancing technology, tool presetting devices to solid carbide tools and sensors. HAIMER bundles all these components in Tool Room solutions, a functional, ergonomic workplace design. A new software that enables the consistent exchange of tool data finally links them to a digital Industry 4.0 system.

HAIMER’s DAC (Data Analyser and Controller) tool management system manages the exchange of target and actual values as well as other tool data between the individual tool room stations and establishes the connection to the corporate network. In combination with RFID data chips, which HAIMER tool holders can be optionally equipped with, or via QR or Data Matrix codes (which can be read out and evaluated by different systems via a scanner), the HAIMER DAC allows a clear identification of the complete tool. Through the network connection, it also provides additional tool data: assembly instructions, article numbers, stock adjustment, and 3D models. In addition, DAC supports the user in the analysis of production data and process optimisation.

Managing Director Andreas Haimer explained, “With the DAC, we want to make digitalisation in tool management feasible for small and medium-sized companies as well.” The concept is therefore scalable from small to large applications, and can flexibly be connected to existing presetting devices as well as various CAD/CAM or control systems.

Another highlight at the HAIMER trade fair stand is a robot cell with which tool presetting can be completely automated. It contains a tool trolley that is equipped with tool holders and tools. On a presetting device Microset VIO linear toolshrink, the tools are custom shrunk and preset. After cooling, the balancing quality of the respective complete tool gets checked. The completely assembled and tested tool is then stored on a second tool trolley and is thus released for use. The complete handling is done by a robot. Haimer pointed out that automation is meaningful and promising only “if the implemented hardware is 100 percent reliable. All of our products are so robust and designed for durability that they ensure maximum process reliability and are suitable for all types of automation.”

HAIMER also focuses on tool (clamping) solutions for turning. With HAIMER Duo-Lock and shrink fit collets for driven tools, the tool change can be realised in a highly accurate and reliable manner in the machine—resulting to reduced set-up times and thus leads to productivity leaps. The shrink fit collet range was extended by sizes ER 11 and ER 32. In order to optimise the tool change for shrink fit collets, a newly designed shrinking device will be presented at EMO Hanover, which masters the heating and cooling of the collets in different lengths easily.
There are also new tool holders for cutting tools, including the BT30 and BT40 tool holders with a face contact, that will contribute to even greater precision and process reliability, especially at high speeds.

HAIMER will be at Hall 4, Booth E16.

TaeguTec has launched a new drill for its TOPDRILL line—which has established itself as a leader in the insert type drill market with excellent productivity—that works on diameters over Ø51.

The advantage of the large diameter cartridge type drill is that by introducing setting plates on the outer cartridge, it enables a single drill body to machine multiple hole sizes. In particular, the cartridge type structure allows adjustment of drill diameters. The new TOPDRILL has multiple setting plates for different diameters and adjustable up to a maximum of 5mm.

In addition, the new drill holders are more convenient for customers because only one insert type is needed for both the inner and outer pockets—facilitating more efficient inventory management and reducing tool costs. And because of its optimal insert positioning, machining stability is also improved.

The drill range for the new line is 51mm to 80mm.
